I hate hate hate kitchen fans, hoods, and televisions in the kitchen.
Not because they annoy me, but because I have to hear my food cooking.
I think sound is ridiculously underappreciated when it comes to food. Whenever someone writes or even talks about cooking, why do they always focus on the smell? The sizzling of the bacon or the drip of the coffee maker go ignored, but can tell you so many things about your food. If I have to turn on the vent fan over the stove, I go insane. I can’t tell what temperature my pan is or where my vegetables are in the cooking process. This makes me really stressed out. Insane. I get all upset and my heart starts racing until I turn the fan off. If I can’t hear my food, I feel like I’ve lost control of it. Am I nuts? Yeah, maybe. But I don’t care. I love the sounds of cooking, I rely on them to produce a quality meal. I’ve realized that putting my ear next to my saute pan is a little strange, but why cook if you’re not using your senses?
Are you listening to your food? I want to know.

My Dad is no cook, no cook at all. But when asked why he does not affix a lid when boiling, he replies – “then how can I hear when it’s ready”. Can’t argue.
